Concrete Block
Re-think Concrete Blocks!
Drive down any road in America and you are certain to see concrete blocks in some form or another. You may notice huge vertical slabs of gray concrete lined up together to form sound proof barriers or you might see construction areas separated from active lanes by waist-level pieces of concrete. Get off the highway and you might notice homes or sheds built of concrete blocks or you might see landscaping hardscapes made entirely of this versatile material. Wherever you are seeing these masonry materials, they are sure to look a little different. This goes to show you that a concrete block can be so much more than just a rectangular square of roughly-textured concrete that has two square-shaped holes in it. These days concrete can be colored, textured, and sized in hundreds of different ways. Accordingly, it is being used in all sorts of interesting and creative ways.
Home Design
In days gone by, building your home out of concrete blocks had a certain stigma attached to it. People built with these utilitarian, gray blocks simply because they were an affordable material. Now, concrete blocks are still affordable, but people are using them to make upscale and modern homes. Since concrete can be textured to look like stone and it can be colored into a range of earthy colors, you can simulate the look of a traditional brick or stone façade without paying as much for it. You can also make a sleek, modern home with large slabs of concrete as outer walls.
Landscaping and Outdoor Maintenance
Concrete blocks are also fantastic landscaping tools. You can use them to build retaining walls, sidewalks, edge flower beds, make hardscapes like fountains, pools, grottos, grilling areas, and patios. Again, as with using them to build an entire home, you will save money by opting for concrete over natural stones or bricks.
These blocks can also help with practical outdoor applications like serving as a base for a shed or using as an under-layer for outdoor storage.
Indoor Applications
A surprising use of concrete blocks is in the realm of indoor decoration and crafts. Using some basic acrylic paints, they can be painted like animals, flowers, and other designs and used in many creative ways. They make excellent doorstops and can even be used as stepping stones for children to reach bathroom sinks. They are also helpful in building furniture like shelves or shoe racks. With all the new designs, colors, and textures of blocks, you can build interesting furniture that is way more aesthetically pleasing than the old two-by-four and gray concrete block models that characterize so many college apartments.
Soundproofing
A final use of concrete blocks is in soundproofing. Although they are not entirely soundproof, they do provide a nice base layer for other materials. So, if you want to convert half your garage into a music studio, for example, consider using concrete blocks for the dividing wall. Then, you can pad the room in order to make it soundproof.
On your house, in your house, in your garden, or for helping dull the sounds of your kid’s heavy metal band, concrete blocks are extremely useful, affordable tools. Before choosing another masonry material for your next project, re-think concrete! You might just be surprised at what you find.
